ECOLOGICAL WEALTH
The sugar bush gives us delicious maple syrup, but it does so much more than that! In Québec, the 34 million maple trees in production provide ecological goods and services essential to human well-being. Each year, this amounts to a value of $1 Billion in Canadian currency.
Maple and Carbon
One (perhaps astonishing) example is that the maple trees in production in Québec capture the carbon produced by the equivalent of 290,000 cars in a year. That’s 9% of all cars in Québec. The Québec sugar bush captures and stores 8 times the carbon that its production processes emit.
The Power of One
The “One” in this equation is you. When you choose a maple product, you contribute to the preservation of maple trees and the ecological services they provide, as well as the possibility of increasing the area of natural forests in production. Let’s put it into direct action: if, every day for a year, you put 5 ml (1 tsp) maple syrup or maple sugar in your coffee instead of 5 ml (1 tsp) plain sugar, you protect the life of two maple trees. Think of that… and imagine the impact that 100,000 others would have if they did the same!
The preceding evaluation of the ecological goods and services provided by the Québec sugar bush was conducted by Groupe AGÉCO.
